Crossword Genius

Cheerful little person, given a bottle (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

jovial

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'cheerful' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'little person given a bottle' is the wordplay.
'little person given' becomes 'jo' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'a bottle' becomes 'vial' (vial is a kind of bottle).
'jo'+'vial'='JOVIAL'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for jovial that I've seen before include "Hearty and cheerful like Jupiter" , "Happy and cheerful" , "Good-humoured, cheerful" , "Jolly, good-humoured" , "Full of mirth" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
