I believe the answer is:
tongs
This might be a double definition.
'chinese societies' is the first definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'grasping tools?' is the second definition.
'tongs' can be an answer for 'grasping' (I've seen this before). I'm not certain of the 'tools?' bit.
