Ross

I believe the answer is:

snakebite

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'cider' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how they can define each other.

I don't understand how the rest of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for snakebite that I've seen before include "It might kill you" , "Cider and lager - it could be poisonous" , "A venomous concoction" , "hooch" , "That could be fatal!" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
