I believe the answer is:

antaeus

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'classical giant' is the definition.
'Antaeus' can be an answer for 'giant' (thesaurus). I'm not sure about the 'classical' bit.

I cannot understand how the remainder of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for antaeus that I've seen is " one beaten with Herculean effort".)

I've seen this clue in The Times and The Sunday Times.
