Cleaners appear to put fellows off (10)
I believe the answer is:
detergents
'cleaners' is the definition.
(I know this)
'appear to put fellows off' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'fellows' could be 'gents' ('gent' can be a synonym of 'fellow') and 'gents' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'deter' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
