Clerk perhaps moving line up for pilot? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

filer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'clerk' is the definition.
(I know that filer is a type of clerk)

'moving line up for pilot?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'line' could be 'file' (file is a kind of line) and 'file' is found within the answer.
A single letter 'r' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'perhaps' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for filer that I've seen before include "Office worker" , "Secretary" , "Cabinet" , "who fusses with her nails?" , "Clerk keeping records" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
