Climbing holiday at end of term for ancient art master? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

caveman

'ancient art master?' is the definition.
(someone who might have produced cave paintings)

'climbing holiday at end of term' is the wordplay.
'climbing' says the letters should be written backwards (in a down clue, letters climb up).
'holiday' becomes 'vac' (abbreviation for vacation).
'at' means one lot of letters go next to another (I've seen this in other clues).
'end of term' becomes 'name' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'vac' after 'name' is 'namevac'.
'namevac' back-to-front is 'CAVEMAN'.

'for' is the link.

(Other definitions for caveman that I've seen before include "old-timer?" , "he has primitive habits" , "Troglodyte" , "Neanderthal person" , "Van came carrying old cliff dweller" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
