Crossword Genius

Close and far off outside? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

alfresco

'outside?' is the definition.
('alfresco' can be a synonym of 'outside')

'close and far off' is the wordplay.
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another (I've seen this in other clues).
'off' indicates an anagram.
'close' put after 'far' is 'farclose'.
'farclose' anagrammed gives 'ALFRESCO'.

(Other definitions for alfresco that I've seen before include "exposed to the fresh air" , "Outside" , "Meal eaten in the outdoors" , "Located outdoors" , "Outdoors, meal perhaps" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
