Crossword Genius

Cluster of flowers in spring, ten in Versailles (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

spadix

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'versailles' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'cluster of flowers in spring ten' is the wordplay.
'cluster of flowers' becomes 'di' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'spring' becomes 'spa' (spa can mean a mineral spring).
'ten' becomes 'X' (Roman numeral).
'spa'+'x'='spax'
'di' inserted within 'spax' is 'SPADIX'.

'in' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for spadix that I've seen is " Spike of small flowers".)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
