Crossword Genius

Coarse stuff from contrary girl booked after game? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

russet

'coarse stuff' is the definition.
(type of coarse fabric)

'contrary girl booked after game?' is the wordplay.
'contrary' says the letters should be written backwards.
'girl booked' becomes 'tess' (character from a book, Tess of the D'urbervilles).
'after' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'game?' becomes 'ru' (rugby union).
'tess' written backwards gives 'sset'.
'sset' after 'ru' is 'RUSSET'.

'from' is the link.

(Other definitions for russet that I've seen before include "Reddish-brown - type of apple" , "Surest type of colour" , "Autumnal reddish-brown colour" , "Brown with a reddish tinge" , "browny-red" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
