Crossword Genius

Coast excluding southeast? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

seaside

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'coast' is the definition.
(I know that seaside is a type of coast)

'excluding southeast?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'southeast?' could be 'se' ('SE' can be a synonym of 'southeast') and 'se' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'aside' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for seaside that I've seen before include "holiday location" , "Beach holiday resort area" , "Shore - disease (anag)" , "Popular resort area" , "Disease (anag) -- coast" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
