Crossword Genius

Coastal locations - successful strikes taking out one (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bights

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'coastal locations' is the definition.
'bights' can be an answer for 'locations' (bight is a kind of location). I am unsure of the 'coastal' bit.

'successful strikes taking out one' is the wordplay.
'successful' becomes 'big' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'strikes' becomes 'hits' (hit can mean to strike).
'taking out' is a deletion indicator.
'one' becomes 'i' (Roman numeral).
'hits' with 'i' taken out is 'hts'.
'big'+'hts'='BIGHTS'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bights that I've seen before include "Wide bays" , "Coastal indentations" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
