Crossword Genius

Cold on the rise causing pain (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cramp

'pain' is the definition.
(I have seen 'Muscular pain' mean 'cramp' so perhaps 'pain' could also mean 'cramp')

'cold on the rise' is the wordplay.
'cold' becomes 'c' (eg on taps).
'on' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'the rise' becomes 'ramp' (to ramp up is to rise or increase).
'c'+'ramp'='CRAMP'

'causing' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for cramp that I've seen before include "To restrict; a muscle pain" , "hamper" , "Give too little space to" , "Involuntary and painful contraction of a muscle" , "Sudden painful tightening of a muscle" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
