Crossword Genius

Collapse having crashed on trip (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

downfall

'collapse' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'crashed on trip' is the wordplay.
'crashed' becomes 'down' (both can mean broken).
'on' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'trip' becomes 'fall' (fall is a kind of trip).
'down'+'fall'='DOWNFALL'

'having' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for downfall that I've seen before include "(Cause of) ruin" , "Ruin, humiliation" , "Collapse, ruin" , "Loss of power or prosperity, a serious tumble" , "Failure (after successful career?)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
