Crossword Genius

Colourful little pieces (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

confetti

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'colourful little' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'pieces' is the second definition.
(I have seen 'pieces of paper' mean 'confetti' so perhaps 'pieces' could also mean 'confetti')

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for confetti that I've seen before include "Pieces of coloured paper thrown at weddings" , "Paper pieces festively thrown" , "Paper rained on newlyweds" , "Stuff to throw at weddings" , "Bits thrown at weddings" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
