Crossword Genius

Come to a fine end (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

taper

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fine end' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'come to a' is the wordplay.
'come' becomes 'ta' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'to a' becomes 'per' (eg 'one a day' means 'one per day').
'ta'+'per'='TAPER'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for taper that I've seen before include "Waxed spill" , "Recorder" , "Tail off; a spill" , "Get thinner - lighter" , "Get more slender" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
