Compensated - with new clothes? (9)
I believe the answer is:
redressed
'compensated' is the definition.
(to redress is to fix or compensate for a mistake)
'new clothes?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'clothes?' could be 'dress' (dress is a kind of clothes) and 'dress' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'reed' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'with' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for redressed that I've seen before include "Given compensation" , "put right" , "Compensated" , "having gone straight" , "Made amends" .)
