Crossword Genius

Composer and artist traversing the way from Paris to Marseilles (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

massenet

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'composer' is the definition.
(I know that Massenet is a composer)

'and artist traversing the way from paris to marseilles' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'and' could be 'n' (common abbreviation for 'and') and 'n' is located in the answer.
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found within the answer.
'way' could be 's' (Compass direction - South) and 's' is present in the answer.
'from' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'mase' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for massenet that I've seen before include "He composed" , "French opera composer (Manon, Werther)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
