Crossword Genius

Composer of Fanfare for the Common Man (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

copland

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'composer' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'fanfare for the common man' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'man' could be 'land' and 'land' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'cop' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'of' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for copland that I've seen before include "American composer (Fanfare for the Common Man)" , "See 9" , "Aaron, perhaps" , "Aaron -; Rodeo, Billy the Kid composer" , "Aaron -, US composer" .)
