Composer using four notes — or none! (4)

I believe the answer is:
cage
'composer' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'four notes or none' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'notes' could be 'ge' and 'ge' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ca' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
'using' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for cage that I've seen before include "John ---, composer; one with bars" , "One famous for creating silence" , "Incarcerate" , "Nicolas - - (films)" , "Form of incarceration" .)
