Crossword Genius

Conductor chosen for ultimately lyrical work (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

electrode

'conductor' is the definition.
(I know that electrode is a type of conductor)

'chosen for ultimately lyrical work' is the wordplay.
'chosen' becomes 'elect' ('elect' as an adjective can mean chosen).
'ultimately' suggests the final letters.
'lyrical work' becomes 'ode' (I've seen this in another clue).
The last letter of 'for' is 'r'.
'elect'+'r'+'ode'='ELECTRODE'

(Other definitions for electrode that I've seen before include "Connecting conductor" , "Conductor making contact in a circuit" , "Conducting point by which electric current enters or leaves" , "Conductor for electricity as it enters or leaves" , "Terminal of, eg, an acid battery" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sunday Times and The Times.
