Crossword Genius

Confronts following kind of lettering designs (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

typefaces

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'lettering designs' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I cannot understand how they can define each other.

'confronts following kind' is the wordplay.
'confronts' becomes 'faces' ('face' can be a synonym of 'confront').
'following' says to put letters next to each other.
'kind' becomes 'type' (type is a kind of kind).
'faces' after 'type' is 'TYPEFACES'.

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for typefaces that I've seen is " Baskerville and the like".)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
