Ross

I believe the answer is:

races

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'contests' is the definition.
(race is a kind of contest)

'red-headed air experts?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'red' could be 'r' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'r' is located in the answer.
'experts?' could be 'aces' (ace is a kind of expert) and 'aces' is located in the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'for' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for races that I've seen before include "Rushes" , "Events at Epsom or Ascot?" , "Moves very fast" , "Speed contests for horses, cars etc" , "Sprint and marathon?" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
