Crossword Genius

Control pulse after working out (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pedal

'control' is the definition.
(I know that pedal is a more specific form of the action control)

'pulse after working out' is the wordplay.
'pulse' becomes 'dal' (I've seen this before).
'after' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'working out' becomes 'PE' (physical education).
'dal' put after 'pe' is 'PEDAL'.

(Other definitions for pedal that I've seen before include "Bicycle footrest" , "work with press from Oxford?" , "Foot-operated lever" , "One of two a cyclist needs" , "Ride a bicycle" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
