Crossword Genius

Country club, briefly after game (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rustic

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'country' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'club briefly after game' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'game' could be 'ru' (rugby union) and 'ru' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for rustic that I've seen before include "plain" , "Of the countryside and country folk" , "Characteristic of the countryside" , "clodhopper" , "Relating to the countryside" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
