Crossword Genius

Country folk onto you (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

yemen

'country' is the definition.
(I know that Yemen is a country)

'folk onto you' is the wordplay.
'folk' becomes 'men' (both can mean people).
'onto' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'you' becomes 'ye' (historical version of 'you').
'men' put after 'ye' is 'YEMEN'.

(Other definitions for yemen that I've seen before include "Arabian republic, capital Sanaa" , "Middle Eastern country" , "Arabian country, capital Sanaa" , "Country between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden" , "Republic on the Arabian Peninsula" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
