Crossword Genius

Courage and good fortune after first prize (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pluck

'courage' is the definition.
(I know that pluck is a type of fearlessness)

'good fortune after first prize' is the wordplay.
'good fortune' becomes 'luck' (I've seen this in another clue).
'after' says to put letters next to each other.
'first prize' becomes 'p' (1st letter of 'prize').
'luck' after 'p' is 'PLUCK'.

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for pluck that I've seen before include "extract" , "Pull lightly but sharply" , "Courage - defeather" , "Intrepidity" , "Pull a guitar string - courage" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
