Craft losing many wise men (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

oracles

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'men' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being plural nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

I cannot understand how the remainder of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for oracles that I've seen before include "Solacer for wise or knowledgeable people" , "They would be asked questions" , "Authoritative sources" , "They were consulted by ancient Greeks" , "Places where ancient Greek consulted their gods" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
