I believe the answer is:
openwork
'creation' is the definition.
(openwork is a kind of creation)
'book by old author?' is the wordplay.
'book' becomes 'work' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'by' says to put letters next to each other.
'old' becomes 'o' (common abbreviation eg in OE for Old English).
'author?' becomes 'pen' (authoring is a kind of penning).
'o'+'pen'='open'
'work' put after 'open' is 'OPENWORK'.
'with numerous gaps in' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.
