Crime happily avoiding boy without companions? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

singly

'without companions?' is the definition.
(as a single person)

'crime happily avoiding boy' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'crime' could be 'sin' and 'sin' is found within the answer.
'boy' could be 'ly' and 'ly' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'g' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Another definition for singly that I've seen is " One by one".)
