Crossword Genius

Criminal dwelling at home (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

villain

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'criminal' is the definition.
(both can mean a bad person)

'dwelling at home' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'at' could be 'in' (synonymous in some cases - eg at school, in school) and 'in' is present in the answer.
'home' could be 'villa' (I've seen this before) and 'villa' is located in the answer.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for villain that I've seen before include "Principal fictional baddie" , "One played badly" , "Criminal; stage baddy" , "He may rob you" , "Principal wicked character" .)
