Crossword Genius

Criticise work, largely empty, but a brilliant display (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

panoply

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a brilliant display' is the definition.
'panoply' can be an answer for 'display' (I have seen 'Impressive display ' mean 'panoply' so perhaps 'display' could also mean 'panoply'). I am not sure about the 'a brilliant' bit.

'criticise work largely empty' is the wordplay.
'criticise' becomes 'pan' (informal term meaning to criticise heavily).
'work' becomes 'op' (abbreviation for opus).
'empty' says to hollow out the word (remove centre letters).
'largely' with its centre removed is 'ly'.
'pan'+'op'+'ly'='PANOPLY'

'but' is the link.

(Other definitions for panoply that I've seen before include "Wide range" , "A complete or splendid array" , "Having full equipment" , "brilliant array" , "Full array, armour" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
