Crossword Genius

Crop frame of blue movie (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

beet

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'crop' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both plants as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'frame of blue movie' is the wordplay.
'frame of' says to hollow out the word (remove centre letters) (use the outside letters which frame the word).
'movie' becomes 'ET'.
'blue' with its centre removed is 'be'.
'be'+'et'='BEET'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for beet that I've seen before include "An edible root plant" , "Source of food" , "Sugar-yielding plant" , "Plant grown for sugar" , "Root used as a source of sugar" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
