Crossword Genius

Crosses made from stake with beams (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

betrays

'crosses' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'stake with beams' is the wordplay.
'stake' becomes 'bet' (synonyms).
'with' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'beams' becomes 'rays' (rays of light).
'bet'+'rays'='BETRAYS'

'made from' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for betrays that I've seen before include "Gives away" , "Sells" , "shops" , "Double-crosses" , "Shows unintentionally, say feelings" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
