Crossword Genius

Czech beer served up for a Yankee -- ice-covered? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

slippery

'ice-covered?' is the definition.
(something covered in ice would be slippery)

'czech beer served up for a yankee' is the wordplay.
'czech beer' becomes 'pils' (pilsner).
'served up' says the letters should be written backwards.
'for a' becomes 'per' ('per' can mean 'for each' person or 'for a' person).
'yankee' becomes 'Y' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.).
'pils' back-to-front is 'slip'.
'slip'+'per'+'y'='SLIPPERY'

(Other definitions for slippery that I've seen before include "Descent into sin in this sort of slope" , "Wet, slimy; evasive" , "Evasive - awkward to walk on" , "Evasive like an eel" , "Hard to grasp or walk on" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
