Deceives the aged, we hear, being comforted (8)
I believe the answer is:
consoled
'being comforted' is the definition.
(console can mean to comfort or sympathise with)
'deceives the aged we hear' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'deceives' could be 'cons' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'cons' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for consoled that I've seen before include "Gave comfort to (someone)" , "Comforted in time of sorrow" , "Cheered" .)
