Defer job for appointee, dismissing the odds (8)
I believe the answer is:
postpone
'defer' is the definition.
(I know that defer can be written as postpone)
'job for appointee dismissing the odds' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'job' could be 'post' (post is a kind of job) and 'post' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'pone' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for postpone that I've seen before include "Put off, defer" , "'Put off, delay (8)'" , "Put off till another time" , "'Hold over, defer (8)'" , "Put off until future date" .)
