Delighted, as Charlie removed from board (7)

I believe the answer is:
chuffed
'delighted' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'charlie removed from board' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'charlie' could be 'c' (phonetic alphabet) and 'c' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'huffed' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'as' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for chuffed that I've seen before include "what bad wolf did?" , "Delighted" , "Happy" , "Over the moon" , "to have gone like a train?" .)
