Crossword Genius

Denial duke takes House of Lords allowances, perhaps (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

disclaimer

'denial' is the definition.
(I have seen 'A denial ' mean 'disclaimer' so perhaps 'denial' could also mean 'disclaimer')

'duke takes house of lords allowances perhaps' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'duke' could be 'd' (abbreviation) and 'd' is located in the answer.
'takes' could be 'is' (being is a kind of taking) and 'is' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'claimer' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Other definitions for disclaimer that I've seen before include "A denial" , "One denies" , "Repudiation" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
