Denmark's first couple pretended to be toppled (7)
I believe the answer is:
deposed
'toppled' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'denmark's first couple pretended to be' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'be' could be 'pose' (posing is a kind of being) and 'pose' is found in the answer.
'denmark's first' could be 'd' (1st letter of 'denmark') and 'd' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ed' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for deposed that I've seen before include "Thrown out" , "Forced out of office or power" , "Forcibly removed from office" .)
