Crossword Genius

Departs with peculiar revolving cylinder (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

drum

'revolving cylinder' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'departs with peculiar' is the wordplay.
'departs' becomes 'd' (common abbreviation e.g. train timetables).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'peculiar' becomes 'rum' ('rum' can be a synonym of 'peculiar'**).
'd'+'rum'='DRUM'

(Other definitions for drum that I've seen before include "nightclub" , "See 16" , "Musical instrument" , "found in the kitchen?" , "one will be beaten" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
