Depressed when alcohol stocks are over (3,2,7)
I believe the answer is:
out of spirits
'depressed' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'alcohol stocks are over' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'alcohol' could be 'spirits' (spirits is a kind of alcohol) and 'spirits' is found within the answer.
'over' could be 'o' (cricket abbreviation) and 'o' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).
'when' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for out of spirits that I've seen before include "Feeling depressed" , "without whisky or rum" .)
