Ross

I believe the answer is:

scorn

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'despise' is the definition.
(I know that despise can be written as scorn)

'grain produced in the south' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'grain' could be 'corn' (corn is a kind of grain) and 'corn' is found within the answer.
'south' could be 's' (abbreviation) and 's' is found within the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for scorn that I've seen before include "Hold in contempt" , "Open disrespect" , "Extreme contempt" , "Disgust" , "Utter contempt" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent and The Irish News.
