I believe the answer is:

unmake

'destroy' is the definition.
(make is the opposite of destroy)

'a french force' is the wordplay.
'a french' becomes 'un' ('a' in French).
'force' becomes 'make' (to make someone do something is to force them).
'un'+'make'='UNMAKE'
