Crossword Genius

Difficult situation - not quite additional example of idiocy (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

morass

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'difficult situation' is the definition.
'morass' can be an answer for 'situation' (I have seen 'Confused situation ' mean 'morass' so perhaps 'situation' could also mean 'morass'). I'm not certain of the 'difficult' bit.

'not quite additional example of idiocy' is the wordplay.
'not quite' means to remove the last letter (most but not all of the word).
'additional' becomes 'more' (synonyms).
'example of idiocy' becomes 'ass' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'more' with its final letter taken away is 'mor'.
'mor'+'ass'='MORASS'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for morass that I've seen before include "complicated situation" , "Bog; confused situation" , "Bog or swamp" , "Area of marshy or swampy ground" , "Tract of soft, wet ground" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
