Crossword Genius

Dirty European occupying a French house (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

unclean

'dirty' is the definition.
(I know that dirty can be written as unclean)

'european occupying a french house' is the wordplay.
'european' becomes 'E' (abbreviation e.g. EU).
'occupying' means one lot of letters goes inside another (inserted letters occupy or enter the word).
'a french' becomes 'un' ('a' in French).
'house' becomes 'clan' (both can mean a family).
'un'+'clan'='unclan'
'e' going inside 'unclan' is 'UNCLEAN'.

(Other definitions for unclean that I've seen before include "Ceremonially impure" , "Dirty, ritually impure" , "Dirty or unwashed" , "Infected" , "Contaminated" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
