Crossword Genius

Disappointing items shown by telescope component capturing only half of Moon (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

lemons

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'disappointing items' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'telescope component capturing only half of moon' is the wordplay.
'telescope component' becomes 'lens' (I've seen this in another clue).
'capturing' is an insertion indicator.
'only half of' indicates taking half.
'moon' with half the letters taken is 'mo'.
'lens' placed around 'mo' is 'LEMONS'.

'shown by' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for lemons that I've seen before include "Strangely melons could be citrus fruits" , "Citrus friuts" , "Could strange melons be citrus?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
