Dismays numerous relatives (6)

I believe the answer is:
daunts
'dismays' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with human feelings as well as being verbs in their -s form.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?
'numerous relatives' is the wordplay.
'numerous' becomes 'd' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'relatives' becomes 'aunts' (aunt is a kind of relative).
'd'+'aunts'='DAUNTS'
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for daunts that I've seen before include "Frightens or discourages" , "Makes afraid or discouraged" , "intimidates" , "Cows" .)
