Do this in arithmetic to rule (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

divide

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'do this in arithmetic' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'rule' is the second definition.
The definition and answer can be both related to thinking as well as being verbs in their base form.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for divide that I've seen before include "Part" , "Seperate, split" , "Separate into portions" , "Separate, distribute" , "Saying : '. . . . . . and conquer'" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
