Do writers have one on retirement? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pension

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'retirement?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'do writers have one on' is the wordplay.
'do writers' becomes 'pens' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'have' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'one' becomes 'I' (Roman numeral).
'pens'+'i'+'on'='PENSION'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pension that I've seen before include "what oldies may have earned" , "Regular payment received after retirement" , "Retiree's income" , "Nice little hotel" , "Retirement pay in a Continental boarding-house" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
